Recycling Scrap Metal for Cash? These Tips Will Increase Your Profits

Blog

Have you started scouring your neighborhood for scrap metal that you can sell for cash, but been a bit disappointed by the money you are able to make from your large hauls? If so, it will help to know these tips that will increase your potential profits.

1. Clean the Metal

You may not be aware that you are getting less for your scrap metal because there are other pieces of metal on it. The process of removing those parts is known as cleaning the metal, and it doesn't require taking a scrub brush to the surface. By taking the time to physically remove parts that contain other metals, such as brass fittings found on copper pipes, you can get more money for the metal because it is pure. If the metal is dirty, the scrap yard will either need to take time to clean it or sell it for a lower rate, which results in you receiving less money.

2. Separate the Metal By Grade

Many types of metal have different grades that are worth different amounts of money, even though they are all made from the same base material. A good example of this is copper wire, which can be the thick copper wire or very thin copper wire that is worth less. When you group all of that metal with a higher grade in with the lower grade metal, the scrap yard will likely weigh it and pay you the rate for the lower grade. Take the time to learn how to identify different metal grades and then separate it for extra cash.

3. Hold Onto Metal You Have in Small Quantities

As tempting as it may be to take every bit of scrap metal you own to the scrap yard at once, they may not be the best way to go about doing it. Metal is only worth money if there is a buyer willing to take it, and many buyers will not take a small amount of a certain type of metal. This means that the scrap yard has to hold onto the metal until they have more of it, and will pay you less as a result. If you hold onto those metals until you have a large bundle, you'll get paid more money from the scrap yard. Just make sure you have a place to store the metal until you have enough of it.

Talking About Recycling

Hi everyone, my name is Makana. Welcome to my site about recycling. I am excited to talk to you about all of the benefits of recycling. Throwing garbage in the trash bin only serves to fill up landfills, which has a negative impact on the planet. With recycling, you can rest assured that the majority of the waste goes toward making new packaging and products. The recycled materials live on and can even be processed another time. I will explore recycling rules and techniques in detail on this site. Please feel free to come back all of the time to learn new things.
